Congratulations to Brian Shaw!

WSM finals were today and there’s already a clear winner by 4 points.

Massive congratulations to Brian Shaw, World’s Strongest Man 2011!

Big Z came a close second, but in all honesty Brian’s win surprised me. It surprised me until I remembered how well he competed last year. He must have put in a lot of good, solid work over the year to win this competition!

Once, again congratulations!

WSM 2011

World’s Strongest Man – day 1 of the finals

Today and tomorrow are the finals for WSM 2011. So far it’s been quite a good competition.

I am quite excited to see who will win it this time.
Here’s the list of finalists as it stands:
  • Brian Shaw
  • Thor Bjornsson
  • Ervin Katona
  • Laurence Shahlaei
  • Terry Hollands
  • Vytautas Lalas
  • Zydrunas Savickas
  • Mike Jenkins
  • Derek Poundstone
  • Stefan Solvi Petursson
The winner for the last two years has been Zydrunas Savickas of Lithuania. He has also won the Arnold Strongman Competition (the heaviest competition going) multiple times but his reign there was put to an end by Derek Poundstone.
Derek Poundstone is an impressive strongman in his own right winning the American Strongman Championships by a clear 30 points. He’s recently dominated the Arnold Strongman Championships as well as recently gotten married – congratulations!
It’ll be interested to see these two tough it out and see what kind of records they’ll set in the process. Big Z has more records than anyone in the sport of Strongman as well as the most wins in various competitions, so my money is on him (he weighs close to 180kg!). Derek Poundstone is more athletic though and has definitely made a big name for himself so at the same time it would be nice to see him crowned WSM whilst also being the Arnold winner at the same time.
A tough call!

Rethinking My Training

On Monday I wrote a post about my first session using PPS style strength training. However, as of today I’ve discovered it’s just not practical with my current schedule and the equipment available.

Instead, I’m going back to a more hypertrophy specific style training (not using HST principles). This is the training schedule I’ll be following:

First Day of PPS Training

PPS stands for Pull, Press, Squat. I’m using the template created by Steve Pulcinella who is a famous strongman but a lot of people know him for this:

Congratulations to Phil Heath!

Last night was the Mr Olympia competition. The biggest competition of the bodybuilding world with a $200,000 prize as well as sponsorship deals.
The 4 time winner Jay Cutler was beat by Phil Heath. In all honesty Phil did come in in fantastic condition and form.
Very lean and not very watery.
Jay Cutler came in 2nd so let’s see if next year he’ll be able to take it back.

Special mention to Kai Greene who put in a LOT of work and took 3rd. His last placing in the O was 7th.
Well done Kai!

Anyway WELL DONE PHIL!

A Scientific Approach to Post-Workout Nutrition

I’m going to share with you an approach I used towards PWO nutrition this summer that has helped me put on a lot of lean mass in a short period of time.

It works by manipulating your natural insulin release. Insulin is the most anabolic hormone your body produces and is more anabolic than steroids.

Legs Session – new leg press video!

Legs day today. I found some motivation in one of the trainers who’s “only been training for 6 months” and is nearly as big as me was saying stuff like “oh he’s catching up, he’s nearly as strong as me” to my dad. You should have seen the look on his face when he saw my leg press go up to 500kg (his max is 400).
